Install Microsoft Adpcm Audio Codec
ADPCM: (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) format. It is a 4-to-1 compressed 16-bit file format. Update directx to 8.1 if you haven't already, test.
Install Audio Compression.' In the Hardware tab, it lists Microsoft Audio Compression Manager. Under Codecs, I have: IMA ADPCM Audio CODEC Microsoft ADPM Audio CODEC Microsoft CCITT G.711 Audio CODEC Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio CODEC msg723.acm. All default audio codecs are in the same list with Microsoft ADPCM Audio Codec and IMA ADPCM Audio Codec; just go to step 5 and select them. - If you want to (re)install video codecs go to step 3, Select '(Standard system devices)' from 'Manufacturer' and 'Video Codecs' from 'Model' then follow the instructions.
The MS ADPCM codec is actually better sounding in my humble opinion, why not make sure it's installed? Control Panel=>add/remove programs=>windows components=>uncheck media components=>reboot=>back into Control Panel=>add/remove programs=>windows components=>re-check media components=+reboot=>test.
