Have you done any special research on the Maratha warrior? I had to work on physical, psychological and intellectual aspects, which included physique, to pick up skills like horse riding, sword fighting etc. To understand the point of view of historians and writers, I read all possible literature on Shivaji. I always kept in mind that I am only an actor playing an iconic character and I should not get carried away by the persona of the character. Would you like to portray Chhatrapati Shivaji’s role in serials in other languages too? Certainly. I would love to portray Maharaj in other languages as well. The people should know, the glorious history of Shivaji, his management skills, his generosity.
He was the only king, who although not born a king, became king with sheer courage and never betrayed anyone. I also feel that a Hollywood film or at least a big budget Bollywood film should be made on Shivaji. Also, a show on national television can help inspire the younger generation. What are your forthcoming ventures? I am planning a theatre show on the life history of 'Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj'. It will be a political drama. A Bollywood film is also in the pipeline.
Have you visited important forts including Raigad and Shivneri? I am from Narayangaon in Pune district and in my childhood I visited 'Shivneri fort' (the birthplace of Shivaji) umpteen number of times. I was also fortunate to portray Chhatrapati Shivaji in Raigad festival held at Raigad fort some time back. I have visited many forts during my school days and now I am also associated with 'Durg Sanvardhak Mahasangh', an organisation working for conservation of forts.
